"Two Medico-Legal Dilemmas: End of Life Care and Medical Misadventure"
will be presented by
Professor Richard Larkins AO

Professor Larkins will address two controversial areas of relevance to both the medical and legal professions. The first is end-of-life care where Professor Larkins will argue that many millions of dollars are spent in medically futile efforts to preserve life in situations where it would be kinder and cheaper to allow death. The second is our tort-based system for dealing with medical misadventure where compensation for patients suffering an adverse outcome of treatment is dependent on demonstrating negligence. It will be argued that, despite recent reforms, this system does not deliver compensation fairly to patients, does not correctly identify and punish negligent or incompetent doctors and is not well aligned with current systems-based methods of improving patient safety. Alternative approaches will be presented.

Members may bring guests who need not to be legal or medical practitioners.
